How to Do an Easy Backflip

A backflip is a basic component of gymnastics and cheerleading. As well, it can be a fun trick to do for your friends. Before attempting more complicated backflips, it's important to learn how to do a basic backflip. It's also important to remember that a backflip done incorrectly can lead to injury, specifically to your neck. For better safety, have a friend or professional nearby to be a spotter and to point out any mistakes in your backflip form.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Soft surface
    • 1
Perform the backflip on a soft surface, such as a gym mat. This will make for a softer landing if you should do the backflip incorrectly.
    • 2
Place your feet a few inches apart. As well, place your hands out as if you were reaching for something in front of you.
    • 3
Bend your knees slightly, swinging your arms down as well, and jump up, fully reaching out with your hands and pulling yourself backwards.
    • 4
Tuck in your legs as you flip backwards.
    • 5
Land on your feet, keeping your legs still slightly tucked. Don't land with your legs fully extended.
