How to Build Character

The Six Pillars of Character are, according to the Josephson Institute: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Working on developing each area helps you build character. As you confront tough situations and deal with the problem in a positive way, you also build character.

Instructions

    • 1
Be honest and deal fairly with people even when you don't want to. Make sure you finish the things you agree to do and go where you say you'll be.
    • 2
Respect yourself and others. Show this by the way you dress and act. Be considerate of other people's feelings and beliefs. Some beliefs are not right, not wrong, just different.
    • 3
Own your choices by taking responsibility for the outcome. Think about the consequences before you act and don't do things if you don't want to accept the consequences. Use self-control and always do the best you can do.
    • 4
Play by the rules and adopt an attitude of fairness. Life isn't fair, but your actions should be. When possible, don't show favoritism and treat everyone equally.
    • 5
Care about others and be willing to lend a helping hand. Express thanks when a person helps you.
    • 6
Make a difference in your area. Get involved in the community, uphold the law and be a positive role model for others. Try to leave every situation better than it was when you arrived.
    • 7
Develop moral awareness and believe in something bigger than yourself. A sense of moral obligations helps you desire to do what's right.
